ARP SHOOTS 13-UNDER AND WINS GOING AWAY AT GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY CLASSIC

Riley Arp carded a final-round 4-under 67 and used a strong front nine in the final round to break away from the pack and win by five shots at the Grand Canyon University Classic at GCU Golf Club.

Riley was 9-under through the first two rounds but only held a one shot lead over Brian Campbell, who went 67-67 the first two days. Riley though made his presence known early in the final round, firing birdies on five of the first six holes to get to 14-under par. Campbell kept pace with birdies of his own on holes 1, 5 and 8 to get to 11-under, and after an Arp bogey on the par-4 8th hole, the lead was just two shots making the turn.

Both players bogeyed the par-3 11th, but Arp increased his lead to four shots after back-to-back birdies on holes 12 and 13 to get to 14-under par.

Arp left the door open after he stumbled on the par-4 14th with a double bogey, but Campbell couldn’t capitalize when he made another bogey on 14. Arp added another birdied on 15 to build a comfortable lead at 13-under, while Campbell recorded his third bogey of the back nine on the par-3 17th to fall to 8-under par.

Arp was solid throughout the three days, carding 16 birdies, one eagle, three bogeys and one double bogey. Still, though, it was his opening stretch on the front nine in round three that helped him cruise to his first win of the season after missing the cut in his first three starts this year.

Despite his even-par final round and 38 on the back nine, Campbell still managed to finish solo second at 8-under.

Rounding out the Top-5 were TJ Howe and Vince Covello, who finished T3 at 7-under; and Horacio Leon and Jake Younan, who finished T5 at 5-under par.

Howe recorded the low round of the day, carding a 6-under 65 to vault into the Top-5. He rebounded nicely from his opening round 75, finishing the final two rounds at 11-under par.
