WHITNEY SHOOTS 10-UNDER TO WIN BY FOUR SHOTS IN zTRIP CLASSIC

Tom Whitney shot a closing-round 3-under 69 and finished 10-under for the tournament to cruise to a four-shot victory over Cory Renfrew at the OnCore Gateway Tour zTrip Classic at McCormick Ranch Golf Club.

Whitney held the clubhouse lead at 7-under following his second-round 6-under 66 gave him a three shot advantage over Renfrew.

Things tightened up early in the final round, as Whitney made bogey on the par-4 second hole and dropped to 6-under, while Renfrew opened with birdies on two of the first three holes to tie for the lead.

Whitney woke up after that and carded four birdies over the next six holes to get to 10-under through eight, while Renfrew traded a birdie and bogey to stay at 6-under. Whitney bogeyed the par-4 ninth but still held a three-shot advantage at the turn. Whitney gained a two shot advantage at the par-4 11th, where he made a birdie to get to 10-under and Renfrew another costly bogey to drop back to 5-under, six shots behind the leader.

Renfrew couldn’t get much going after that, carding six straight pars before his birdie on the par-5 18th got him to 6-under for the tournament. Whitney, with a safe lead, made bogey on 15 and closed things out with a birdie on 18 to secure the four shot win.

Whitney won easily despite his opening-round 1-under 71 that featured just two birdies and one bogey. He rallied though with a bogey-free 66 in round two and his 69 in round three – shooting 9-under the last two days after his first-round 71.

Renfrew finished with rounds of 72-68-70 to finish solo second at 6-under, while Jordan Rodgers and Scott Harrington finished T3 at 4-under. Rodgers closed with four birdies through the last six holes to shoot a final-round 68 to jump into the Top-5, while Harrington stumbled in with a final-round 73.

Riley Wheeldon recorded rounds of 69-73-71 to finish fifth at 3-under, while Andre Metzger finished sixth at 2-under par to earn his third Top-10 of the Fall season.
